Excellent work carried out by SC MAINTENANCE in my garden this week !
And in particular, first class , friendly service by Jonathan, for preparing and installing my new garden gate, and installing concrete spur/ post to my fence to straighten it out.
I do, on this particular occasion knock off one star, purely as nobody turned up to start work on the original date planned , due to staff issues.
This wouldn't normally have been a problem, but would have liked to have been notified that morning , rather than be sat around waiting to find nobody would show up.
Apart from that one gripe, can I recommend Williams team???

The team came to replace a fence for my mother, to remove the old one and take it away. I couldn’t be there that day and mum is 87 so I was keen to be contacted if need be. I need not have worried mum reported a respectful team of men who did an excellent job from start to finish. This is the second time that I have used Will, this time for the outside of my pond and to relay the slabs. They had just started when they came upon a problem meaning they couldn't do what was originally planned. However, Will came up with a solution, got more materials and by the end of the day, I had a great surround on my pond & slabs that didn't move.
I am so pleased with it, and if anything it looks better than what was originally there.

Start with what's actually failed
Most fence problems fall into one of four jobs, and each is priced differently:
- Concrete spur repair: a spur is concreted in beside a timber post that has rotted at ground level, and the post is bolted to it. The panels stay put, so it's usually the least disruptive fix. More about spur repairs.
- Post replacement: the panels either side come out, the old post and footing are dug out and a new post is concreted in. More about post repairs.
- Panel replacement: damaged panels are swapped between sound posts. More about panel replacement.
- New fence: the whole run is replaced. More about fence installation.
The factors that change the price
- Materials: timber or concrete posts, panel style and height, and whether gravel boards are added.
- How many posts or panels: there's a set-up cost to any visit, so fixing several at once is usually better value than doing them one at a time.
- Ground conditions: chalk and flint, heavy clay, sand, tree roots or old concrete footings all change how long digging takes.
- Access: a wide side gate is quicker than carrying everything through a house or down a long alley.
- Removal and disposal: taking away old panels, posts and concrete adds time and tipping costs.
- Height and slope: taller fences and stepped panels on sloping ground take more work.
Repair or replace: the cost logic
Repairing is almost always cheaper if the problem is limited to one or two posts or a few panels. Once most posts along a run are rotten, you end up paying for several repairs on a fence that will keep failing, and replacement becomes the better long-term spend. Why we don't publish a price list
Two jobs that sound the same, like “one post replaced”, can take very different amounts of time depending on the ground, access and what's on the other side of the fence. Rather than publish figures that don't fit your job, we quote from photos so the price reflects what we'll actually be doing.
How to get an accurate quote quickly
- Take a wide photo of the whole fence run and close-ups of the damaged posts or panels.
- Measure the length of the run (or count the panels) and note the height.
- Tell us whether posts are timber or concrete, and how we'd get into the garden.

Frequently asked questions
Is a spur repair cheaper than a new post?
Usually, because the panels don't need to come out and the old footing doesn't need digging out. It only works if the post is sound above ground, though.
Is it cheaper to replace a few panels or the whole fence?
A few panels is cheaper, as long as the posts are sound. If the posts are failing too, a new fence is often better value over time.
Why do quotes vary so much between trades?
Differences in materials (such as concrete vs timber posts), whether disposal is included, and how access and ground conditions are allowed for. Check what each quote includes.
Can you quote without visiting?
In most cases, yes, from clear photos and rough measurements. If something is unclear, we'll ask.
