Excellent work carried out by SC MAINTENANCE in my garden this week !
And in particular, first class , friendly service by Jonathan, for preparing and installing my new garden gate, and installing concrete spur/ post to my fence to straighten it out.
I do, on this particular occasion knock off one star, purely as nobody turned up to start work on the original date planned , due to staff issues.
This wouldn't normally have been a problem, but would have liked to have been notified that morning , rather than be sat around waiting to find nobody would show up.
Apart from that one gripe, can I recommend Williams team???

The team came to replace a fence for my mother, to remove the old one and take it away. I couldn’t be there that day and mum is 87 so I was keen to be contacted if need be. I need not have worried mum reported a respectful team of men who did an excellent job from start to finish. This is the second time that I have used Will, this time for the outside of my pond and to relay the slabs. They had just started when they came upon a problem meaning they couldn't do what was originally planned. However, Will came up with a solution, got more materials and by the end of the day, I had a great surround on my pond & slabs that didn't move.
I am so pleased with it, and if anything it looks better than what was originally there.
If you want reliable, polite and reasonable prices then I would highly recommend Will.
1. Make it safe first
Don't try to stand a heavy section back up on your own while it's still windy. If a fence is leaning over a path, driveway or road, keep people and cars away and lay loose panels flat on the ground where they can't blow about. Keep children and pets away from broken timber, nails and snapped concrete.
2. Take photos before anything is moved
Once it's safe, take a wide photo of the whole run and close-ups of each broken post and panel. Photos help with any insurance claim, with conversations with your neighbour, and with getting a quick quote. Note whether the posts are timber or concrete and whether they've snapped at ground level or pulled out of the ground.
3. Work out what actually failed
- Panels blown out, posts still standing firm: usually just panel replacement.
- Timber post snapped or rotted at the base: often a concrete spur repair or a new post.
- Concrete post cracked or snapped: the post is replaced and the panels slid back in if they're undamaged.
- Most of the run is down or rotten: a new fence is usually better value.
4. Check who owns the fence
If the fence is on a boundary, your deeds or title plan may show who is responsible for it. If it's your neighbour's fence, or shared, talk to them before arranging work. It's much easier to agree things up front.
5. Insurance
Some home insurance policies cover storm damage to fences and some exclude it, and many exclude fences that were already in poor condition. Check your policy wording before you claim. Your photos from step 2 will help either way.
6. Stop it happening again
- Heavier panels such as closeboard stand up to wind better than lightweight lap panels in exposed spots.
- Concrete posts don't rot at ground level, which is where most storm failures start.
- Gravel boards keep the bottom of the panels off wet soil.
- Fixing a loose post early stops it taking the panels either side with it.
Frequently asked questions
Can I leave a fallen fence until the weather settles?
Yes, as long as it's safe, laid flat and not blocking a path or road. Repairs are best done in calmer weather anyway.
Can you reuse my panels?
If they're undamaged, often yes. Panels that have split or twisted usually need replacing.
Should I replace timber posts with concrete after a storm?
In exposed gardens it's often worth it, because timber posts that have rotted at the base are the usual weak point. See our guide to concrete vs timber posts.
